Kirsten Tran, Class of 2027
Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Drexel
It’s Monday morning and you’re looking at the week ahead: 16 hours of clinic, two midterms, and a schedule full of lectures and labs.
No matter the school or curriculum, there is one thing that most – if not all – optometry students can agree upon: optometry school is demanding. When you’re in the midst of it all, it’s easy to find yourself asking, “Why did I choose optometry?’ And while you may have known the answer at the start of your journey, it’s not uncommon to lose sight of the bigger picture along the way, particularly as the academic load intensifies.
So today, I challenge you – don’t just ask yourself why optometry. Instead, really take a moment to reflect on your answer. Take a step back and revisit the moment you chose to pursue this path. What inspired you then? What motivates you now?
Your reason may be the same as when you began, or it may have evolved through your clinical and classroom experiences. Maybe it’s the patient who shared a laugh with you during your very first (incredibly nerve-wracking) independent eye exam. Maybe it’s the fascinating case of Leber’s congenital amaurosis that you observed during your specialty rotation. Or maybe it was something as simple as seeing a beautiful sunset on your way home from lecture – a moment that reminded you just how incredible the gift of sight truly is.
Whatever your “why” may be, let it be your guide during long study nights and busy clinic days. Let it refocus you when you feel overwhelmed. Most importantly, take pride in the field you’ve worked so hard to be a part of. Study hard, stay grounded, and don’t forget to enjoy the journey.
