Aesthetic Medicine and Optometry

Aesthetics in optometryย ย

Optometry has been participating in the cosmetic industry for decades now. We assistย ourย patientsย inย carefullyย picking out frames that suit their facesย to help them seeโ€”and lookโ€”their best.ย If patients donโ€™t care for glasses, we turn them toward contact lenses,ย where they have options to get colored contact lenses as well to change their appearance. If they donโ€™t like eitherย of these options, thenย we consultย withย them for refractive surgeryย options.ย So why donโ€™t we expand our services becauseย we areย soย intimatelyย interlinked with the cosmetic journeyย our patients take?ย

The first signs of aging usually occur around the eyesย andย this puts optometrists in a unique position to capitalize on this and assist patients in making informed, safe and healthy choices.ย ย

Baby boomers really want to slow down the hands of time and with this comesย a skyrocketing demand for aesthetic services and cosmetic enhancement.ย The truth is thatย this โ€œlook as young as you feelโ€ demand is here to stay.ย ย

Why optometrists?ย ย

Billsย in the state legislatures are being introduced to expand theย scopeย of optometry from minor surgeries, such as removing skin tags from the lid, to performing laser surgeries.ย We areย qualifiedย to prescribe, or administer, these procedures. In addition, we are more suited to treat the common side effects, which are often ocular-related.ย All in all, we areย a safeย choice to perform these particular types of services.ย ย

What are some procedures you could employ at your office?ย ย

(dependentย uponย stateย scope laws)ย ย

In the past decade, there has been an enormous growth of cosmetic procedures that are ocular-relatedย because the first signs of aging occur around the eye.ย These includeย microbladingย for fuller-looking eyebrows, eye lash extensionsย for thicker and longer lashes, under-eye careย to reduce the appearance of dark circlesย andย puffy skin,ย supplementary nutrients for healthier skin, hair, nails, etc., andย theย generalย expansion of safer, healthier cosmetic products.ย ย

Botulinum toxin (Botox)ย ย

Most patients are aware of the cosmetic benefits of Botox toย diminish the appearance of wrinkles caused by genetics, human expression or sun damage,ย but fewer are aware that it also is used therapeutically to treat conditions such as migraine headaches andย benign essential blepharospasm.ย Chronic migraineย patients commonly complain about visual disturbances, whichย leads them toward optometric care.ย Therefore, Botox can be used in office therapeutically, as well as cosmetically depending on patientsโ€™ย needs.ย ย

Collagenย ย

With aging comes the deceleration ofย collagen productionย causingย skinย to loseย elasticityย and firmness.ย This decrease in collagen results in fine lines andย wrinkles, leavingย peopleย with smile lines, crowโ€™s feet and otherย undesirableย creases.ย Now there are many collagen-enhancing treatments to boost the collagen rebuilding process. One example isย a noninvasive radio frequency solutionย that assistsย inย reducingย the appearance ofย unwantedย fine lines and wrinkles.ย Collagen boosts are commonly intended to minimize the appearanceย ofย fine lines around the eyes, forehead and glabella.ย ย

Hyaluronic acidย ย

Hyaluronic acid is a naturalย and potent anti-agingย substance that is used toย greatly boost moisture retention andย maintain skin hydration,ย volumeย andย suppleness.ย It scavenges free radicals and softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.ย It also isย commonly found in treatments for dry eye.ย ย

Poly-L lactic acidย

Used as a treatment for facial lipoatrophy, a loss of fat beneath the skin thatย results in the appearance ofย sunken cheeks, indentations and hollow eyes.ย

Intense pulse light (IPL)ย ย

IPLย lasersย haveย been commonplace in dermatology for treating a wide range of skin problems, including facial rosacea.ย Because studies have shown that 80-90 percent of patients suffering from facial rosacea also express ocular rosacea, these treatments improved patientsโ€™ย ocular symptoms (dry eye) after IPL treatmentsย for their facial rosacea.ย From a cosmetic standpoint, IPL hasย overwhelminglyย been shown to improveย hyperpigmentation,ย discoloration,ย softening of fine lines and wrinkles,ย erasingย age spots,ย tighteningย laxedย skin, andย removeย unwanted hair.ย ย

Never underestimate the power of cosmeticsย ย

We oftenย viewย cosmeticsย simply asย a tool toย enhance ourย appearances,ย but itย holds more power than justย transformingย appearances.ย It helps to transform the person and shapes their mindset.ย It helps to give that person confidence and happiness.ย We know from many psychological studies that whenย patientsย look and feelย theirย best, theyย experience huge emotional and psychological benefits.ย The importance of appearances has always been a priority for patients, and the way that they feel about the way they look matters.ย Letโ€™s face it: The importance of appearances affects all of us. We each want to put our best look forward.ย Cosmeticย benefits areย an intrinsic part of ourย mental health andย boostย our patientsโ€™ย emotional well-being and self-esteem.ย ย

Seeing the unique position that optometrists are in with our extensive knowledge of the ocular system, weย should beย veryย proactive in discussingย cosmeticย treatmentsย with ourย interestedย patientsย who are commonlyย lookingย intoย these kinds of procedures.ย Letโ€™s help make it safer and provide them withย aย fullyย educated opinion to help them make informed, healthy choicesย and avoid unnecessary risks. On the flip side,ย if our state optometric laws allow the performance of these procedures in office, we have anย avenue to grow our practicesย and build a holistic venture.ย

Weย areย allย drivenย by the desire to look young and feelย confidentย inย ourย appearance, and weย as optometristsย canย incorporateย that flourishing cosmeticsย marketย to ultimately help our patients see their best and be their best.
