Top Free Android Apps for Busy Optometry Students

Android phones make up roughly half of the smartphones that are used in America, however, their presence is often ignored next to the popular iPhone. With smartphones we are have a wide wealth of information accessible to us in a matter of seconds. This list of free  Android apps will make finding resources in clinic faster and organizing your life easier!

Clinic

  1. Educus ICD-9 Codes, Ver. 2011There are many ICD-9 code apps available on Google Play but one of the features that sets Educus apart from it’s competitors is that it will generate codes while you are typing, saving you time!
  2. Eye Handbook: Eye Handbook is the most useful and robust optometry related apps on the market. It allows you to look up ICD-9 codes, CD 4 codes, contact lenses, calculate effectivity, reference medications and so much more!
  3. Epocrates: Epocrates is one of the most widely used medical apps on the smartphone market today. With it you can reference medication uses, dosages and contraindications in a flash.
  4. TLA Ophthalmology: Ever have that moment where you are looking through a patient’s medical record and you see an acronym that you have no idea what it stands for?  Don’t worry, we’ve all been there before. Luckily with TLA Ophthalmology you can decipher what acronyms stand for quickly.

School

  1. ArcnoteIf you’ve ever been in the position where you are studying with friends and see a great reference or study guide that you want to scan, so you take a picture with your phones camera only to have the document come out blurry, fear no more.  With Arcnote you can take a picture of a study guide with your phone, crop the image to the exact size and it will automatically enhance the contrast making the text easier to read. You can even use the app for taking notes on important Powerpoint slides in lecture and insert voice memos corresponding with the specific image.
  2. Dropbox and Google DriveBoth Dropbox and Google Drives allow you to save files from your computer to your phone so that they are easy to access wherever you go. You can download a desktop version of both of these apps to your computer and drag in the files to automatically sync with your phone. Now you never need to worry about losing your flash drives.
  3. Easy Voice Recorder: Easy Voice Recorder allows you to record lectures from class onto your phone. From the app you can rename your files and save them into many different formats, allowing them to be played back on your phone or in your music player.
  4. Hybrid Stopwatch and Timer: Having an easy to use stopwatch is very useful when timing yourself in preparation for practicals or for timing MAF and BAF on your pediatric patients. With Hybrid Stopwatch and Timer you can time yourself easily and quickly.
  5. OptometryStudents: The new OptometryStudents app allows you to stay up to date on the go with all of your favorite OptometryStudents articles, interviews, and clinical pearls!
  6. StudyBlueStudyblue is a great website to create flashcards to prepare for tests. You can even share your flashcards with your friends. With the android app, you can link your flashcards that you made on your computer with your phone and always have easy access. You shuffle your flashcards and keep track of your progress all within the app.

Finance

  1. LevelUp: With LevelUp you link your credit card to their secure server to generate a personalized QR code. Many local businesses provide initial discounts and rewards for repeated savings when paying with LevelUp. Many retailers will advertise with the LevelUp decal in their storefront. To use LevelUp open the application, decide the percentage of gratuity, and the retailer will scans your QR code like they are taking a picture. You can earn even more savings through their referral program, and if you choose all of your savings can be donated to the charity of your choice.
  2. Mint: Mint makes it easy to keep track of your finances by linking your bank accounts so you can track your spending patterns, categorize your bills, and formulate budgets. Now whenever I’m on the go if I ever need to check my account balance I can do so quickly and easily.

Misc

  1. Juicedefender: The one downside to having a smartphone is the decrease in the battery life. The last thing that a busy optometry student wants to do is charge theirphone midday. Juice defender optimizes your phones battery life with the push of a button.
  2. Play Music: As a busy student it’s nice to have music with you. With Play MuAirplaneiPhonesic you can import music from your computer onto your phone by saving the files to your phone, or you can upload your music onto Google’s server and stream your music through WiFi. Play Music recently announced a paid subscription product where for $8.00/month you can access unlimited streaming to all of themusic on their server. With Google’s new redesign their interface is more colorful and easier to use than ever.
  3. Simple Calendar: Simple Calendar is my favorite calendar widget for viewing my daily schedule. It syncs with my Google calendar and has a clean and customizable look, making it possible to see my daily schedule at a glance.
