Western University of Health Sciences embarked on a special mission when it opened its doors in 1977 as the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP): The College of Optometry offers an innovative Doctor of Optometry program that emphasizes full scope optometry, vision therapy, low vision rehabilitation, and care for vulnerable populations such as those with developmental disabilities. The College of Optometry was granted the pre-accreditation classification of “Preliminary Approval” by the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education on February 15, 2008. Not less than 12 months prior to graduation of the program’s first class, at the University’s invitation, the ACOE will schedule an on-site visit to be held near the end of the academic year to determine accreditation status.
