Dry eye is a hot topic in the medical and optometric industry, and for good reason! As technology is advancing we are able to develop resources that are better able to diagnose and treat patients suffering from dry eye syndrome. One of the most common current modes of treatment includes artificial tears. With a multitude of artificial tears to prescribe, we as clinicians need to be able to customize the artificial tear regimen, in order to give personalized recommendations to our patients. The following guide breaks down dry eye by tear layers and different mechanisms and offers appropriate artificial tears. The second page of the guide (click the arrow on the bottom left corner) briefly explains why specific tears are beneficial for dry eye. Although having dry eyes is often a multifactorial condition that is associated with other clinical signs, this guide helps steer us in the right direction as far as artificial tears. Combine this information with other treatments such as steroids, mechanical treatments, diet control, and occupational changes to provide your dry eye patients with superior care.
